Ladies' Section Report

It was a wonderful start to the new bowling season on Tuesday 31st August with the Ladies' opening luncheon & social bowls. Approximately 70 ladies enjoyed a fabulous luncheon provided by the "bring a plate" of each member.

Bernice Helle (Official Representative of Bowls Victoria) was our guest for the day and, along with Lady Club Champion Jean Reddy, performed the official opening of the Berwick Ladies' bowling year.

Thirty-six (36) ladies braved the freezing conditions and played bowls until 11.30, then thawed out with sherry and nibbles, and much chat and laughter, until lunch was announced.

Our Selection Committee was then introduced by Chairperson Freda Farrell, who advised on the "do's & don'ts" of pennant competition.

Four teams have been entered this season, and a new format of scoring was announced. Also, 2 variations of "rink of the day" will be awarded each week.

Kate Goonan introduced her team of ladies on the Tournament Committee. These are Joan Heggart and Wilma Hardy, who has taken over from Anna Barrie who unfortunately found herself overcommitted. Kate encouraged all members to enter club events and to please remember that entry fee must be paid when you enter and not on the day of competition.

There will be an amended "Roster Duty" notice pinned up on the ladies' board. Please check your dates against it as there have been amendments due to some ladies resigning and some going social.

In closing, I wish all members a most successful bowling season and I look forward to working and sharing with you all.

Wendy West
Lady President

Ladies' Report

During the winter months a diligent group of ladies kept their fingers nimble by doing a variety of craft work for the trading table. Many thanks to Shirley Moon and Verna Darcy for their input and for the luscious morning teas they supplied each week.

Our Lady Champion, Jean Reddy, together with Bernice Helle from Bowls Victoria, put down the first bowls to open the 2010/11 season on 31st August. Bowls was followed by sherries and lunch.

As many ladies have elected not to play pennant this season, the Selection Committee has entered teams in 4 sections only. To give more ladies an opportunity to participate, the 4th section will have 4 teams using a rotation system.

Practice matches during September were held against Mulgrave Country Club, Cranbourne and Glen Waverley clubs.

A E R – Mixed Pairs Challenge 2011

For the last 6 years, the A E R Foundation have sponsored this marvelous event, and this year we have the opportunity of entering again.

Please circle on your bowling calendar Sunday, 31st October 2010, as the day that this event will be played at Berwick.

Keep your eyes peeled for the main posters and entry forms – they will be available on both the ladies' and men's slides.

Contact person is Lady President Wendy.

Each player must fill in their own individual entry forms, as these go in the draw for a trip on The Ghan. Forms are to be handed with your entry fee to Wendy no later than 28th October.

This is a great opportunity for our club and a chance for all our good pairings to enter and try their luck.
Cost of entry: $22 a pair
Format for this day will be announced closer to the event.

Social Report

The winter season is over once again and I would like to thank the ladies who helped throughout the season. Brenda Bignold, who is only too willing to serve the soup each game, Judy Fisher, Ausa, Lois, Bev Bristow, and Anne Whittaker who helped when Brenda was showing her skill at winter carpet bowls – a big thank you to all. We made a good profit for the Club.

Opening Night was held on Saturday night, 28th August, with a meal and entertainment. Thanks to all who helped make this evening a success.

We are having a $1000 Lucky Draw night with great trivia questions and other surprises (you must be there to win the $1000) on 22nd October.
  • Cost $20 per head with great food and lots of it!
Other social nights will be notified later on – watch the social news board.

Bar Runs Dry!!

This is what will happen unless we recruit more volunteers, men and/or women to assist behind the bar to serve beverages responsibly.

The bar is a major source of revenue for the club and good service and management is essential for maintaining the good cheer that currently exists.

Please see Geoff Eager or Ralph Jans.

Training will be provided.

Carpet Bowls

The last of the Club Championships has now been decided with a mixed pairs win to John & Brenda Bignold after an intense final against Harry & Stella Walsh.

The game was touch and go up to the last two ends when a fine shot from Harry unfortunately saw the jack leave the mat and the penalty shots awarded made the task almost impossible at the late stage of the game. Better luck to Harry and Stella next year.

The end of season dinner was attended by approximately 20 of the indoor bowlers, at the Pine Grove Hotel, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food, drinks and fellowship the evening presented.

The year's achievements were outlined by Mike Adams and when all the results are put together, at one time, you realise what a successful year this section of the Club has had.

However, we must not rest - next year has got to be better. We all have the ability to go further, particularly in the South Group Competitions. Success there will lead to better things at the State Finals in Sunshine.

All that remains for this season is the Don Small Memorial Trophy Competition, to be held on the 27th October, followed by the AGM on the 8th November. Results and Elected Officials will be notified in the next newsletter.

As always mentioned, anyone wanting to try this format of bowls can attend the Monday session at 1pm or Wednesday at 7pm where rules will be explained and coaching given. To join in just add your name to the appropriate list on the Indoor Bowlers notice board, near the men's slope, and turn up. You are guaranteed a game - but - remember bowls shoes must be worn.
