Champion Mixed Pairs - 2 x 4 x 2
Sunday 17th April 2011.

April 17th saw the Inaugural BCIB Champion Mixed Pairs played at Berwick Bowling Club.

For the first time, the Men and Lady Club Singles Champions were given the opportunity to play in a Mixed Pairs [2 x 4 x 2] competition against other bowling club Champions.

The event saw Berwick Bowling Club Lawn greens full with 42 teams competing for the honour of the Champion Mixed Pairs.

After a week of extreme rain the thought of our weather smiling on the day was really in doubt. Berwick outgoing Lady President Wendy West said "I have been on my knees all week praying for a good day". Someone must have been listening, as the conditions on the day were perfect.

Teams came from across Victoria; Cranbourne RSL, Kangaroo Flat, Yarragon, Camperdown, Brighton, Altona Sports Club, Kilmore, City of Frankston, Frankston RSL, Eltham, Clayton, Werribee RSL, Elmore, Moorabbin, Meeniyan, Rosebud, Loch, Kangaroo Flat,Hampton Park, Cranbourne RSL, Kyneton, Berwick, Minyip, Elmore, Camperdown, Bendigo, Benalla, Paynesville, Wurruk, Korumburra and Sorrento to name just a few.

There wasn't a place that you could look on the greens and not see some very good bowls. As the day progressed the spectators were given stand up games from not only their own champions, but from all champions on the day.

The competition idea came from Berwick Bowling Club member Joan Heggart, supported by the club and also by BCIB (Bowling Club Insurance Brokers) who sponsored the tournament with a $1000 donation for the prizes on the day.

Teams had to play three (3) games of twelve (12) ends; on checking the leader board after the second game there were at least eight teams who could walk away with first place; that is how close the game scores were.

After a great day of bowls, the winners on the day were Clayton's Champion Singles - Michael Burge and Evelyn Martin taking out first prize, Runners up: Somerville's Kirsty Tootell and Bill Johnson, 3rd Place: Denise Eastick and Zak Storm from Hampton Park and 4th place: Kangaroo Flat Champions Geoff Boyd and Marie Rowe.
